A video of dance, two bodies, two costumes, and two colors. In Post-production, the bodies’ “skins” are changed and mutated into windows, reflections, projections, and new integuments that reflect the body within, respond to it, or dissolve its boundaries as a single body or structure. The dance reflects experiments in color, shape, and movement—exploring how two bodies move in conjunction with one another. Further experiments investigate how these bodies, these organisms, these shapes hold the potential to embody a new space or entirely new form that is contingent on the costume and color palette cloaking the body.

The video was produced by sewing two chroma-key costumes—using blue and green fabric—and keying out each panel of color within the costumes to create a window for an alternative surface, texture, or color. The embedded videos are experimental clips examining the vast spectrum of color that can be found within our skin, when pressure or tension is applied; other clips use fabric or ink as a means of animating a surface and bringing a wide scope of colors to a small area. The choreography was heavily influenced by contact improv and was conceived on the spot, dictated by the costume’s limitations or flexibility when moving.

Directed, Produced, Choreographed, Animated, and Costume Design
by Kathryn Marshall & Noemi Bilger.
© 2013

“Coloropoly.”

A series of strips of hand-painted 16mm film spliced together and animated through color and shape. Each strip was painted on with India ink, acrylic paint, drawing inks, gloss medium, shellac, bleach, acetone, xylene, sharpie markers, thread, cotton, saran-wrap, and x-acto blades. Heat, moisture, and cold were applied—and in some cases, gravity, where the strips were hung at shifting angles as they dried or hardened. Finally, each frame was photographed individually and either backlit or frontlit to emphasize color or texture.
Though each strip was created in an entirely experimental manner, there was a startling resemblance not only between all the strips, but also to biology and microscopy—where each individual frame was strikingly similar to images produced in a lab or photographs of micro-organisms, fibers, or crystals, etc.

These films evoke a living-laboratory, where the images—or mock-science—comes alive when played as a film, but also can be dissected as individual specimens or samples from a larger study when the video is scrubbed through frame by frame.

Kathryn Marshall
©2013

“Helix Nebula”

This series of monoprints, where each layer was run through the press multiple times with multiple layers stacked on each print, is a study of how light travels through space and how much of its intensity and clarity is lost before it even reaches our retinae. Certain colors of our visible light spectrum possess higher energy (such as blue and violet) than other colors (such as red and yellows) and therefore is more likely to travel further distances more “intact.”

The physical qualities and limitations of paper are similar to that of stellar dust clouds or atmospheres the light has to travel through; in other words, each sheet of paper is another “atmosphere” the ink has to travel through before it is absorbed and visible on the final and furthest sheet of paper. The resulting image—or ghostprint—is perhaps more compelling than the original and most saturated print.
